I break it down like this b/c the compounded gains on the $8k Speedy today could be worth close to $750k in like 40 years. Assuming an average annual return of 12%.
This is such an important question for us all to consider.
I got to thinking about it from a recent LinkedIn post I saw. Net net, the original poster is a ~30 year old AE at Salesforce. He’s picked up on an influential watch culture at SF and he’s thinking about his entry ticket, an Omega Speedmaster
So he asks himself, do I buy the Speedy and gain access to this watch culture, or save the money…
…So where did he land?
The $750k when he’s 70.
Here’s why he’s wrong
He missed a critical decision point. It’s not just about the Speedy or the $750k when he’s 70.
What he missed was quantifying the value of getting on the inside of the watch culture at SF.
This was an enormous miss
Think about the brands these guys wear on the inside at SF if an Omega is the ticket in…Breitling, IWC, Panerai, Ulysse Nardin, Blancpain, Rolex, AP, maybe even Patek
Guys (and gals) who wear these watches tend to be the most interesting people in any room (except if they’re wearing a Submariner…avoid them at all costs).
Here’s a profile on who they are…and are not
They don’t spend their Sundays watching football all day. They probably know how to drive a manual transmission. And they have insanely interesting personal stories that you would share with your friends after hearing.
My point is you want to be on the inside with this crew. Who can they introduce you to? What experiences can you gain in their orbit? How much can you learn from them to level up 3x faster?
This is worth millions. Right now.
I know because I’m on the inside of these circles. I speak from experience in every word written.
$8k Speedy or $750k when I’m 70?
I’ll take the $8k Speedy all day b/c $750k isn’t worth much to me in the adult diaper days. I want everything life can throw at me right now.
Would you rather own an Omega Speedmaster today or $750k in the bank when you're 70?
