Recent Auction Data Highlights Sustained Strength in the Luxury Watch Asset Class

The Geneva Fall Auctions last month realized record-breaking prices across dozens of rare and unique luxury watches. The results continue to demonstrate that luxury watches are an alternative asset class that, when played correctly, can not only out-perform the S&P500 but create real wealth.

The Boston Consulting Group highlighted a few years ago that luxury watch models from Patek, Rolex and AP outperformed the S&P500 by nearly 3x over a 5 year time horizon from 2018-2023.

And that pace of over-performance against the S&P500 benchmark continues to accelerate.

I've written now for more than a year about how luxury watches follow the trajectory of gold prices, act as a hedge to inflation, and are reliable stores of wealth. Alternative asset investors have taken notice and continue to park money into the asset class at record rates.

Here are my top three picks across Patek Philippe that offer attractive value in the current market with room for growth in the next 5 months.

This Patek Philippe Chronograph came out swinging decades ago with big, bold proportions (42mm 18k Gold).

And as time went on, collectors realized just how few were made and how perfectly it fits modern taste. That’s when it turned into one of the most talked-about, highly chased pieces in the neo-vintage Patek world.

This 5070 in particular is on another level. Yellow gold & black dial is one of the rarest combos out there. For serious Patek fans and alternative asset investors alike, this is a holy grail.

The Aquanaut marks a big shift in Patek Philippe’s history. It's when the brand finally loosened up and leaned into a more youthful, modern vibe. Pieces like this full-kit Aquanaut 5066A are perfect examples of Patek’s first real attempt to win over the next generation of luxury watch lovers.

Even though Patek built its name on complicated dress watches, the laid-back, sporty Aquanaut has become one of the hottest and most sought-after models in the modern watch world for alternative asset investors and Patek collectors.

This was once a sleeper hit in the Nautilus lineup but alternative asset investors and Patek collectors are now taking serious notice of the ref 3800, the mid-size Nautilus. Dropped in 1981, this 37.5mm version marked a big moment for the collection, taking the Nautilus from a single model to a class.

Even with its vintage roots, the Patek Philippe Nautilus 3800 is just as relevant and sought-after today as it was back then. Stack it up against modern pieces or its 80s and 90s siblings, and the build quality still holds its own. With its clean design and top-tier craftsmanship, it’s a piece collectors and alternative asset investors will chase for generations.

Luxury watches are wealth strategies you can wear. The key is approaching them with the same discipline you’d bring to any other asset class.
